Musician turns bike-making hobby into a business with worldwide sales

October 31, 2003

Santa Cruz County Sentinel

SANTA CRUZ — Paul Sadoff's small Westside shop is crammed with bicycles.

More than 30 orange, pink, blue and purple bikes dangle like Christmas ornaments from the ceiling, line the walls and fill the floor in various states of assembly.

The music is cranked loud and Sadoff, in jeans and a T-shirt, hunches over a bike stand doing what he loves best -- building frames with artistic fervor.

Getaway hot tubbing at Esalen's new baths

January 12, 2003

Santa Cruz County Sentinel

By KAREN KEFAUVER

I slipped out of Santa Cruz last month for a three-day getaway to Esalen Institute in Big Sur. I was eager to return to my favorite coastal haunt, which is world famous for its natural sulfur hot springs, year-round workshops, and trademark massage technique.

I knew Esalen would meet my strict criteria for a solo retreat: little planning, minimal driving and no cooking.

I also wanted to explore the new, $5 million bathhouse overlooking the ocean.

October 9, 2003

Santa Cruz County Sentinel

Goldiberry Skeel was not discouraged by falling off her bike and losing a shoe at her first cyclo-cross race. The Santa Cruz native took the mishaps in stride as part of her debut in the Surf City Cyclo-Cross series last year at the Watsonville Fairgrounds.

After years of cheering from the sidelines and with nearly no race experience, Skeel plunged into cyclo-cross.

"It's such a supportive environment, I decided it was time to try it," said Skeel, 24.
