I felt anxious.

SANTA CRUZ — Paul Sadoff's small Westside shop is crammed with bicycles.

More than 30 orange, pink, blue and purple bikes dangle like Christmas ornaments from the ceiling, line the walls and fill the floor in various states of assembly.

The music is cranked loud and Sadoff, in jeans and a T-shirt, hunches over a bike stand doing what he loves best -- building frames with artistic fervor.

That has been a problem for the popular instructor, who has taught yoga throughout the county for the past seven years. I will not cross the finish line last at the Women's Danskin Triathlon this Sunday. No matter how slowly I swim, bike and run, Sally Edwards will be behind me and everyone else, determined to bring up the rear at Lake Almaden. That is part of her job.

Edwards, spokeswoman for the six-race Danskin series, will trail the slowest competitor throughout the half-mile swim, 20 kilometer-bike ride and 5-kilometer run. "I'm called the 'sweep athlete,'" explains the 13-time Ironman finisher.
